Going back to school was a challenge for me. I’ve been in the marketing industry for about 10 years and I currently own and operate a business magazine. However, being a business owner without the credentials under my belt was sometimes a drawback. Many times I felt there were nuances that I needed to know more about. It’s been 20 years since I have been in school and I am taking full advantage of it.

The reason it took me so long to commit to going back to school is because online school is fairly new. Traditionally people think they have to go to a brick and mortar school to get an education. I was guilty of always trying to find the time, effort and energy to attend a physical school that I could work my schedule around.

I found it very challenging to run my business and go to school. I found that with online learning, I was able to set my course schedule based on my current work schedule. I found the time that worked best for me to complete a lesson, and I was able to complete it without interruptions.

As a small business owner I thought I was a know it all. Before going back to school, I thought there wasn’t anything that I hadn’t done or experienced. However, going back to school allowed me to learn the theoretical practices behind what I was actually doing. Practical application and theoretical application are two totally different things. Having a knowledge base for both definitely pulls you together to be successful.

It’s a rewarding experience to go back to school and challenge myself to learn things over. I was able to retool myself and I feel that now I am better equipped and have added experience to take my business to the next level.
